We've known for a long time that light-emitting diodes (Leds) use far less electricity than conventional high-pressure sodium lamps for the same amount of light added. But if we can figure out exactly what proportion of the visible light spectrum is pleasant for plants to absorb, it could theoretically further reduce the energy consumption of space gardens. In the case of lettuce, at least the magic elixir seems to be a 95:5 ratio of red and blue lights on the shed roof. A new scientific study by Mitchell has found that this special mix of light uses 50 percent less energy than using full-coverage LED lights and 90 percent less energy than conventional light bulbs.
Both cannabis growers and future space farmers have found that LED lights that emit only visible light are the best option. Plants throw away most of the sun's energy, and evolution has made plants prefer to absorb red and blue light of all colors. After a lab makeover, researchers found that lettuce fed with a little blue light and a lot of red light produced the highest yields, cutting energy consumption tenfold.
