Technical Parameters

Fog culture, also known as aerosol cultivation, is a new cultivation method. It is a soilless cultivation technique that uses spray device to atomize nutrient solution into droplets and spray directly into plant roots to provide water and nutrients for plant growth.

Definition

Also known as gas culture. The abbreviation of spray cultivation. One of the ways of soilless cultivation. Instead of solid matrix, it directly sprays nutrient solution onto plant roots to supply the nutrients and oxygen it needs. Containers, usually made of foam plastic sheets, are perforated and planted with plants, stems and leaves exposed to the holes, and roots hang in the dark of the lower space. Spray nutrient solution to root system every 2-3 min for a few seconds. The nutrient solution is recycled, but the solubility of fertilizer in the nutrient solution should be high, and the droplets should be very fine.

Fog culture plants are being popularized. Especially in the poor vegetation conditions, it is more suitable for the popularization and application of fog culture plants.

Key points of cultivation management

(i) Colonization

Spray culture method can be similar to deep liquid water culture. However, if the planting plate is inclined, the plant can not be fixed with small gravel, a small amount of rock wool fiber or polyurethane fiber or sponge block is used to wrap the root neck of the seedling, and then put into the planting cup. Then put the planting cup into the planting hole in the planting plate. The amount of rock wool, polyurethane or sponge wrapped in the seedlings should not fall off from the fixed planting hole, but should not be too tight to prevent crop growth.

(ii) Nutrient management

Compared with other hydroponics, the concentration of nutrient solution is higher than that of other hydroponics, which is generally about 20~30% higher. This is mainly because when the nutrient solution is supplied in the form of spray, the nutrient solution attached to the root surface is only a thin layer of water film, so the total amount is less, and in order to prevent the plant from absorbing enough nutrients when the supply is stopped, the concentration of nutrient solution should be slightly increased. If it is semi-spray culture, it does not need to increase the concentration of nutrient solution, can be the same as deep liquid water culture.

Spray culture is intermittent fluid supply. Liquid supply and intermittent time should depend on plant size and climatic conditions. Larger plants, abundant sunlight, small air humidity, liquid supply time should be longer, intermittent time can be shorter. If it is semi-spray culture, the interval time of liquid supply can be slightly prolonged, but the time of liquid supply can be shorter, the time of liquid supply during the day should be longer than that at night, and the interval time should be shorter. Some people, in order to save the trouble of adjusting the supply time every day, shorten the supply time and interval time, and increase the frequency of 5~10 min, interval, that is ,5~10, respectively. But the pump needs to start frequently, its service life will be shortened.

III. Evaluation of fog culture

(i) Advantages

1. Can solve the problem of oxygen supply in root system, and there will be almost no bad growth due to root hypoxia.

2. Nutrient and water utilization rate is high, nutrient supply is fast and effective.

3. Can make full use of the space in the greenhouse and increase the number and yield per unit area. Greenhouse space utilization is 2~3 times higher than the traditional flat cultivation.

4. Easy to realize the automation of cultivation management.

(ii) Shortcomings

1. The investment of production equipment is large, the reliability of the equipment is high, otherwise it is easy to cause problems such as nozzle blockage, uneven spray and excessive droplet.

2. The concentration and composition of nutrient solution are easy to change greatly during planting, so the management technology is demanding.

3. In the case of a short power outage, the spray device can not operate and can easily cause damage to plants.

4. As a closed system, such as improper control, root diseases are easy to spread and spread.
